Jewerly Metals Guide

I've compiled a guide of commonly-used metals in earring posts, and related terms. Please let me know if you have any allergies so I can match you to the perfect pair!

  • Sterling Silver

    • Pros: It’s precious metal and thus has actual value. A great alternative if you are sensitive to nickel as these are made up of 92.5% silver

    • Cons: Sterling silver can tarnish over time, but it is reversible by cleaning with a polishing cloth or tarnish removing products

  • Stainless Steel

    • Pros: It does not tarnish and is a good alternative if you are allergic to silver

    • Cons: It’s made up of iron + chromium, but can contain trace amounts of nickel

  • Gold-plated

    • Pros: 14k, 18k, or 24k gold layer around another metal like brass or stainless steel which makes it stronger than pure gold

    • Cons: the gold layer can eventually wear off, so treat gently

  • Copper

    • Pros: Has antimicrobial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties

    • Cons: It can turn skin green. This is more common on rings/bracelets because it’s a reaction to sweat; therefore, it is a less common problem with earrings.

  • Hypoallergenic: this doesn’t mean zero allergies! Just that it’s less likely to cause a reaction.
